Packaging growth: Which sectors are driving high demand?

By Norman Mayorga, Product Manager Graphic Communications, Commercial Printing Ricoh Latin America

The printing industry is constantly evolving. In the last two years, customer expectations have changed and they are demanding more personalized and attractive communications. Beyond price, they are focusing on added value, such as personalization or short runs on demand, and even innovative elements such as QR codes and Augmented Reality.

In this context, the packaging market is one of the fastest growing segments in commercial printing. This market is expected to be valued at $18 billion by 2023.

But which sectors are driving Packaging growth?

Food: The food industry is looking for smart, clean, convenient, and sustainable packaging. Digital printing for packaging already provides a convenient solution for creating simple and easy-to-assemble packaging, while being able to provide short runs on demand with high customization capabilities.

Medicines & Vitamins: The pharmaceutical industry seeks to balance an attractive, practical and secure design in its packaging. For this sector it is key to have security applications in packaging to protect against counterfeiting through custom printing.

Cosmetics: The cosmetics industry seeks to offer exclusivity and quality with refined and valuable packaging. Digital printing provides a solution for packaging with eye-catching and attractive designs to capture the consumer at the first instant.

Customized events: The event production industry seeks to connect emotionally with its customers through special packaging, making events unique and memorable.

Specialty packaging for marketing: The direct presentation of the product can shape or change the perception of the product, generating differentiation, acceptance, loyalty and success. Digital printing offers the opportunity to design unique packaging for each consumer's needs. By printing in low volume, limited edition versions for events and social media campaigns can be produced much more easily.

Undoubtedly, the packaging industry will continue to grow as printers continue to reinvent their production models to increase productivity and expand their service offerings. It is key that businesses in the printing market maximize the capabilities of their digital presses and software to generate new applications that translate into better experiences for their customers.
